This Is the Part of Italy Most Americans Will Never See

And that’s exactly why I loved it.

I flew into Rome and skipped the usual route. No Colosseum lines. No Florence crowds. Just a car, a map and a few hill towns most people have never heard of.

It was mid November. Hardly any tourists around. And that’s when Italy shows you who she really is.

My first morning in Orvieto, the cathedral was wrapped in fog so thick I could barely see the top. I stood in the piazza almost alone and watched it slowly appear. In summer, that same spot is shoulder to shoulder. That morning it was just me.

In Assisi, I walked stone lanes with nobody in front of me. I had the view from the Basilica of St. Francis almost to myself.

But the moment I still think about happened in a tiny town called Mercatello sul Metauro. A grandmother stood at a wooden board rolling pasta by hand. No recipe card. No shortcuts. The same way her family has made it for generations. Not for tourists. Just because that’s how it’s always been done. And she absolutely loved how tall I am. She couldn’t stop laughing about it.

In the same town, I watched a woman make lace by hand, thread by thread. True art, and patience. You can’t fake that. And you won’t find it on a tour bus.

Near Senigallia, I went underground into the Frasassi Caves. Massive chambers. A silence you can feel. Most Americans have never heard of them. They should.

Here’s what I learned. November is a gift in Italy. Quiet towns, lower prices, and foggy mornings that feel like a movie. Orvieto is an easy train ride from Rome, so you can be in a hill town by lunch on your first day. And the Marche? Hill towns, Adriatic beaches and almost no crowds. It might be Italy’s best kept secret.

If you’ve already done Rome, Florence and Venice, this is your next Italy.

True memories are made in the moments. And in seeing places most people don’t even know exist.

I go so you know where to find them.

Want to experience Italy like this? Let’s plan it together.
