Riverside Luxury Cruises Review: Five Nights on the Danube That Felt Like Family

I've sailed on a lot of ships, but I've never had a crew make me feel like family the way they did on the Riverside Mozart. I boarded in Vienna for five nights on the Danube, and by day two they knew my drink, what I liked with dinner and every one of my allergies. Nobody had to ask twice. That's when I knew this sailing was going to be different.

Riverside is one of the newer names in luxury river cruising. They took over the former Crystal river ships, so you get a small, elegant ship with that polished, everything-is-handled feeling. My mornings started with the curtains pulled back and the Danube sliding past my window, quiet villages and bare spring trees drifting by while I had my coffee. The rain shower in my suite was so gorgeous I took a selfie in it. I’m not even sorry.

  • Morning coffee with a view of the Danube
  • Yes, I took a selfie in the shower. I'm 6'3"

And the food. Oh, the food. Seared scallops one night. Puff pastry with prosciutto, figs and lavender honey another night, and I’m still dreaming about that one. Lunch came straight off the grill on the sun deck with the river sparkling behind us, and in the afternoons I’d curl up in the café with a real Viennese hot chocolate piled high with whipped cream. Every meal felt like someone was paying attention, because they were.

  • Seared scallops for dinner on the Danube
  • Real Viennese hot chocolate. Whipped cream required.
  • Lunch straight off the Green Egg on the sun deck
  • They knew my drink by day two.
  • Sunset in Langenlois, Austria
  • Prosciutto, figs and lavender honey. Still dreaming about it.

Off the ship, the Danube does the rest. We wandered little Austrian wine towns like Langenlois, where the church glows gold at sunset and the whole town feels like it’s been waiting for you to slow down. Then you walk back aboard, someone hands you your drink, and you sail off to the next town while you’re at dinner. Unpack once. Wake up somewhere new. That’s the magic of a river cruise, and Riverside does it beautifully.

So who is it for? If you want luxury that feels personal, not stuffy, this is it. Couples, friends, and anyone who’s done a big ship and wants something quieter and more refined. If you’re after nightlife or the lowest price, I’ll point you somewhere else. But if you want a crew that knows your name, your drink and your table by day two, Riverside delivers. And in most cases, booking it with me costs the same as booking direct. You just get someone who’s actually been there.

I go so you know. If a Danube river cruise is calling your name, let’s plan it together.
